Heat Treating Fasteners

Fasteners come in all shapes and sizes, including screws, bolts, nuts, and washers. While most fasteners are produced by cold forging, depending on the application we also sometimes encounter those made using hot forging or machining methods.

Best Practices for Heat Treating Fasteners

Fasteners are used in all types of markets from aerospace to agriculture. While specifications vary based on application, there are some common priorities that manufacturers of fasteners share. We’ve built our process to deliver the results you need to satisfy your customers and keep the end-users of equipment safe.

Carbon Control

Proper carbon concentration in the atmosphere during processing is important to get right to yield in-spec results. Our proprietary predictive model and automated furnace controls ensure the right carbon content in the atmosphere at all times while we process your fasteners.

High Volume & Turnaround Times

Our Nadcap-certified continuous belt furnace at Paulo Kansas City and IATF 16949 belt furnaces in St. Louis and Murfreesboro provide high volume capacity for safety-critical fasteners for aerospace and other markets.

Traceability

The safety-critical nature of many fasteners requires traceability. We collect more process data than any commercial heat treater and can provide verification that your parts ran to spec with just a few clicks. We can also easily provide any required documentation you may require.

Finishing Capabilities

You can simplify your supply chain with heat treating and metal finishing processes such as zinc plating and zinc phosphating under one roof. You’ll also reap the same benefits for your metal finishing results you do when you heat treat with us: consistency from lot to lot, accurate processing, and the data to back it all up.

Through Hardening

Also known as neutral hardening, through hardening lends strength to fasteners for aerospace, railroads, automotive, and agriculture. Our continuous mesh belt furnaces are equipped with automated loading systems, process controls, and uniform oil quenching systems to deliver in-spec results every time.

Zinc Plating

Zinc plating is an electroplating method used to lend corrosion resistance to steel screws, nuts, and bolts. The zinc plating lines at Paulo Murfreesboro are high capacity and precision-controlled.

Zinc Phosphating

Zinc phosphating is performed as an intermediate step in the metal finishing process to prepare for further surface coatings while also imparting corrosion resistance.

Materials Used for Fasteners & Bolts

Fasteners and bolts come in a wide variety of materials. Different steel types or nonferrous materials are specified based on the requirements of the application and whether properties such as stress or corrosion resistance are of importance.
